I happened upon your website while attempting to find background information of the School Board and Dearborn's annexation of the Fairlane School District.
I have to say I am very frustrated with my son's educational experience to date. I have been long-time Dearborn resident, who graduated from a local high school. Times have changed since I was a student to say the least.
It gulls me to know that they took away the creative arts theme from our school last year due to "budget cuts," but see fit to continue paying for a Montessori program. I can't believe I have to pay my hard earned tax dollars to support what should essentially be a private education. This school is reportedly open to the public, but if you did not pay for preschool at the program your child's chances of attending elementary school there are slim to none. The school board should eliminate this program immediately. As I see it, it is no different then a theme school.
I am also irritated by the fact the school board initiated a community boundary commission, but failed to take the committees' recommendation. Instead, they allowed private citizens (who happened to be on the committee, but acted on their own) to submit a proposal at the last minute.
This proposal (proposal D) stated that my son would not be allowed to attend his neighborhood school, but would be bused out of the area to attend another school. It then allowed for a school from the far east side to be bused to our neighborhood school.
It appears that the plan favored another school over our school. It would seem logical to me to allow the neighborhood children attend their neighborhood school and then allow another school to be bused in, provided there was adequate space.
As you are probably aware the proposal was passed with an amendment. The parents at my son's school are very pleased with the results, but have come to learn that others are attempting to overturn the vote. A contingency of parents have met privately with two school board members (Mary Lane and Amy Blackburn) in Ms. Lane's home and are attempting to meet with other school board members.
Thank you for allowing me to vent my frustration regarding these matters. I'm curious to know if anyone else is on the same page as me.
